Aerial engineers and installations

A 'domestic' aerial installer undertakes the installation of TV, Satellite and Radio Aerials for the single dwelling environment. System Installers, in addition to that of the 'domestic' installer a undertake the installation of TV, Satellite and Radio signal distribution in multiple dwelling units such as blocks of flats or commercial premises.
CAI Approved SMATV Installers are companies who have individual engineers who have achieved City and Guilds / CAI certification in design and installation of signal distribution systems.

About the CAI

The CAI is the recognised body for the aerial and satellite industry. The CAI is committed to raising Standards within the industry and whilst the criteria for membership is extremely high, the consumer is assured of a quality installation at a fair price. One of the many membership requirements is that any installing member company will agree to the examination and test of any equipment manufactured or supplied, the inspection of any installation or investigation into conduct which could have a detrimental effect on the reputation of the CAI or its Members.

Commitment & Professionalism
CAI Members only employ qualified personnel whose work is monitored by an Inspector. If a CAI Member is undergoing inspection, it may be that the CAI Inspector will wish to accompany them to view their installing capabilities. This would be at no extra charge to the customer. It is however, within the rights of the customer, to refuse to allow the installation to be inspected.

Guarantees
All CAI Members guarantee their installations for a minimum of twelve months. In addition to this, the CAI undertakes to back-up this guarantee with its own twelve months guarantee, for domestic installations only. This means that should a CAI Member fail to honour their twelve months guarantee on a domestic installation, the consumer can seek redress via the CAI - Provided that the problems are within the realms of the original guarantee, the CAI will arrange to have the work corrected - at no extra cost to the consumer.

Codes of Practice
All Members are required to work to the exacting standards laid down in the CAI's Codes of Practice.

ID Cards
CAI Members should carry identity cards that clearly state their name and company details together with a photograph. If you are in any doubt about the validity of an installer, ring the CAI on 020 8902 8998 during normal office hours.

Complaints Against CAI Members
If a customer is unhappy with the standard of workmanship carried out by a CAI registered installer, or indeed is dissatisfied with any aspect of the job, the CAI has an official complaints procedure. The CAI will fully investigate any complaint that it receives against one of its Members and is empowered to impose sanctions on its Members If necessary. When it is deemed that a Member has fallen outside the boundaries of the CAI Codes of Practice, they will be instructed to correct the areas that have been identified. The CAI will monitor the complaint to ensure that the defects are rectified. The Member company will then be asked to confirm to the CAI that this has been done, within the pre-determined timescale that will have been set. The CAI will then check with the customer to ensure that they are now satisfied.

Depending on the severity of the complaint, the installer may be asked to take the appropriate training and/or have their membership reviewed. A CAI Member who fails to rectify work or to carry out the necessary training will be removed from membership and will no longer be authorised to use the CAI logo.

Complaints Against Non CAI Members
The CAI is unable to become involved in any complaints against a company that is not registered. If however, a company is not a Member of the CAI but is displaying the logo, the matter will be reported to the local trading standards office immediately. If you are unsure whether a company is a Member of the Confederation of Aerial Industries Limited, please check with the CAI office

Analogue teletext is being used to determine whether homes will need new aerials after digital switchover. According to the BBC, around 10% of domestic aerials will need attention in order to receive digital transmissions. The difficulty has been developing a reliable way of letting viewers know they will need a new aerial.

As the BBC Innovation and Research's 2007 review explains, a test pattern was designed which became less apparent as signal quality fell. But while that technique showed the correct trend, "there was too much spread on individual results to give a reliable indication".

Instead, BBC engineers working within the Digital Reception Prediction Group at Digital UK, the industry-funded body charged with coordinating digital switchover, came up with a test pattern using analogue teletext.

The test pattern, broadcast on page 284 on BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1 and Channel 4 and S4C, provides a more accurate and objective result. "Tests have been successsful, with errors starting to show just at the point where an aerial installation ought to be checked," says the annual review.

A Digital UK spokesman told Lovelace Consulting that the teletext innovation is being used in Whitehaven to determine aerial strength ahead of the area's switchover—the UK's first—on October 17.

"We've produced a leaflet on how to test aerials, explaining the teletext page and also providing a reference 'snowy' picture for people to compare their reception to (if it's as or more snowy, they will probably need a new aerial)," said the spokesman. "The other method explained in the leaflet is to hire a Handheld Aerial Checker from local retailers which you take home and plug in to test."

FREEVIEW
Freeview TV is digital television through a conventional roof top aerial. With this change in Technology many manufacters have bought out  new adapters as well as integrated digital TV sets (IDTV) to the market. Digital terrestrial transmission is designed to work, in the main, with existing roof –top aerials in good condition, but some households will need a new roof-top aerial. It depends on several factors, where you live, the frequencies used at your local transmitter and the condition of your current aerial.

Digital Satellite
At the moment this requires a dish. Most users subscribe to pay –TV and receive subsidized equipment. You can receive digital TV by satellite without being a subscriber and further information can be obtained from our recommended fitting companies. Terrestrial digital, (Free view) is available in most areas via a TV aerial and free view box. No subscription is needed and about 30 channels are available. Channels available include the new BBC3, BBC4 and BBC News 24.

All of our recommended fitting companies can supply and install free view boxes at the same time as installing aerials. In a lot of cases the new TV’s already have free view built in, something you should check when buying new.
