Shown at the bottom of the page is a breakdown of which towns reside in which counties, along with links to the carpenters that we have selected for you. We have tried hard to ensure the process of selecting a carpenter in your area is as easy as possible, and we hope to have provided you with the service that you deserve. Many thanks.

Carpenters

Carpenters and joiners make and install the wooden fixtures and fittings found in domestic and commercial construction projects. These can include floorboards, kitchen and bathroom units, window frames and doors, roof trusses and wall partitions. Whereas a carpenter is a skilled craftsman who performs carpentry - a wide range of woodworking that includes constructing buildings, furniture, and other objects out of wood a joiner is a woodworker who makes and installs architectural woodwork, fabricating and installing building components such as doors, windows, stairs, wooden panelling, mouldings, kitchen cabinets, and other wooden fittings. The skills of a joiner are somewhat intermediate between a carpenter and a cabinet maker.

Generally carpenter/joiners are multi-skilled and their work can be generalised into one of the categories below. They may use their craft skills across the whole range, or specialise in just one or two:

First fixing (site work) - fitting the wooden structures of a building, such as floor and roof joists, roof timbers, staircases, partition walls, and door and window frames

Second fixing (site work) - installing skirting boards, door surrounds, doors, cupboards and shelving, as well as door handles and locks.

As one does not need any formal qualifications to become a carpenter or joiner on-site experience and quality of work becomes an important issue when selecting someone to complete a piece of work.

Rogue Traders

Customers in Britain spend on average two weeks of their lives waiting at home for rogue tradesmen who fail to turn up, according to a new survey.

And a third of adults (around 15 million) said they have lost a whole day or more waiting for a knock on the door that never came. More than half of people surveyed by community website thebestof.co.uk said it had happened to them twice or more.

The average wait of six hours 48 minutes occurred on average every five years, adding up to over 80 hours in a lifetime - the equivalent to two working weeks.

How the web is helping carpenters: The web is having a significant and positive impact on the fortunes of carpenters according to a new study released today.

The research by thebestof, a national network of local marketing websites, run by local people, that champion the best businesses in their area shows that small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) plan to grow their businesses by on average 38% in the coming year.  However the more web-savvy SMEs including builders have growth ambitions that are twice those of their conventional SME counterparts (41% vs 20%).

The study is based on telephone interviews with 500 small and medium sized businesses combined with an online survey completed by a further 2,583 SMEs.   The businesses were drawn from across the UK and from a mix of sectors, and included carpenters and 70 builders.
