Ecological services

With global warming now an undisputable fact in becomes a civic duty to ‘do our bit’ towards reducing our contributions to the man-made causes. Some methods of personal household mitigation (such as insulating lofts and windows) have been around for many years and are mostly well understood by the majority considering their installation. Now there are more ways of contributing that are available through high street outlets. Solar panels and Wind turbines are two examples that are beginning to become more popular although the range of options is getting greater all the time. For example ground heating is an option that a lot of people may not appreciate. Pipes carrying water can be buried underground and where they are not only insulated by the earth but warmed by natural processes as the heat conducts up from the centre of the earth. The earth may not feel very warm but it is enough to give water temperature an initial ‘lift’ that is a warmer starting temperature before a heating system heats it up to be warm enough for central heating. All ready in place in some large buildings such as Southampton hospital and town hall, it is now an option for new build or retro fitting within a domestic setting. Green roofs

An ecological service that is getting more popular is the installation of green roofs. A green roof is where the roof of a building has been converted to house soil and vegetation, or a growing medium similar to a garden. It may also contain additional layers such as root barrier, drainage and irrigation systems. A grren roof can be used to provide amenity space for building users, to grow fruit and vegetables, to reduce heating as the vegetaion acts as a natural insulation barrier, which also helps to keep the property cool in summer months, to filter pollutants (ie CO2 gases), and increase wildlife habitation in urban areas.

Icebergs

Drifting icebergs are "ecological hotspots" that enable the surrounding waters to absorb an increased volume of carbon dioxide, a study suggests.

US scientists found that minerals released from the melting ice triggered blooms of CO2-absorbing phytoplankton.

These microscopic plants were then eaten by krill (shrimp-like organisms), whose waste material containing the carbon sank to the ocean floor. The findings are published in the online journal Science Express. The study, carried out in the Southern Ocean's Weddell Sea in December 2005, has helped researchers understand the impact of free-floating icebergs on the marine environment.

Ecological code red

The world moved into 'ecological overdraft' on Saturday, the point at which human consumption exceeds the ability of the earth to sustain it in any year and goes into the red, the New Economics Foundation think-tank said. Ecological Debt Day this year is three days earlier than in 2006 which itself was three days earlier than in 2005. NEF said the date had moved steadily backwards every year since humanity began living beyond its environmental means in the 1980s.

"As the world creeps closer to irreversible global warming and goes deeper into ecological debt, why on earth, say, would the UK export 20 tonnes of mineral water to Australia and then re-import 21 tonnes," said NEF director Andrew Simms. "And why would that wasteful trade be more the rule than the exception," he added.

Not only was there a massive gulf between rich and poor but there were deep variations in environmental profligacy between the rich countries, NEF said.
