Ground workers are usually the first tradesmen on site on a new building project. They are responible for clearing the ground, and digging the footings and trenches to prepare for the foundations. Ground workers usually work in teams, although you do get self-employed ground workers for smaller projects such as extensions or driveways.
The ground working stage of the building process covers everything that is required on or beneath the ground at a construction site. It normally covers excavation of foundation trenches and removal of the spoil and the placement of drainage. It is a stage that is distinct from hard-landscaping that might cover terracing a sloping garden and the construction of retaining walls before the soft-landscapers lay lawns and plant shrubs.
On a commercial site specialist groundworkers might also lay Flag stones ,Paving and Block Paving , Kerbing ,Edging and Tarmacing. Other specialists are usually responsible for pouring concrete foundations or base slabs.

Groundworkers insurancePublic liability insurance for groundworkers in todays litigious climate is seemingly more important than ever. As a ground worker or road surfacing contractor the business activities involved mean that they could be sued by the public for negligence. Although not yet at the same level as America, we are seeing more and more people believing that accidents are not just accidents but a product of someones negligence - ending with the result that they sue. Although the demise of some firms actively pursuing compensation claims on behalf of customer have been well documented, the arrival of 'no-win no-fee' agreements and legal expenses cover 'after the event' has meant that access to the courts has never been easier. This ease of access, together with the perception that judges will award compensation in virtually every case - assuming that the business will have cover so that 'no-one loses' - of course this is not the case as the premiums insurers charge have to be increased to meet these claims. This means that businesses have to charge more to meet these insurance increases, and so eventually the customer has to pays for the awards.
