Heating and heating engineers are an offshot of the plumbing industry. All plumbers whilst learning their trade will be taught about heating and central heating systems. However there comes a point in a plumbers career when ultimately they will decide whether or not they would like to do general plumbing, or carry on further training to become a heating engineer.` Anyone working with gas needs to be "Corgi registered", and this is one of the main requirements to being a qualified heating engineer. Corgi registrations need to be renewed and it is very important to check the certificate before authorising anyone to work on your gas or heating system.
As the name suggests heating engineers work with heating systems, and this generally means gas. If you have a problem with your boiler, cooker or central heating then it is a heating engineer you would need to call. Aswell as repairing central heating and boilers etc.. they are trained to install new systems an upgrades in either old or new properties.
The training process for becoming a heating engineer can start at the age of 16 once you have finished your GCSE level qualifications. You would then be rquired to continue onto a NVQ level 2 in either Mechanical Engineering or in Basic Plumbing Skills. The main education authority for courses of this kind are the City and Guilds group that take the level of education in the subject up to a level 3 in Mechanical Engineering services or a level 3 in Plumbing studies it is often thought best to run the two courses along side one another, however, this may not be necessary if you are taking an apprenticeship. It is advised to start training in the trade as young as possible as you can get the experience in the practical side of the work as well as the knowledge learnt in the courses.

Energy efficiency
An important part of the heating industry nowadays is energy efficiency. Energy efficiency is playing a key role in the installation of modern heating systems, and new boilers are being designed and developed to maximise efficiency levels and keep down CO2 emissions.
Energy efficient performance has been improved through features such as a pre-heat facility which on a combi boiler will keep the secondary heat exchanger hot all the time, although it can be switched off for optimum efficiency.
