plasterering is a craft that hasn't changed much in the last 150 years.
plastererers mix and apply different kinds of plasterer to provide a finish to internal surfaces such as walls, floors and ceilings. They may also be involved with mixing and applying finishes for external walls using sand and cement, pebble-dash or stone-effect materials.
Jobs range from working on new-build housing or commercial developments, small-scale domestic extensions to repair and restoration of existing plastererwork. There are two main types of plasterering work:
solid plasterering - applying wet finishes to walls, ceilings and floors, or putting protective coverings such as pebble-dashing on external walls, using a range of hand tools and sometimes spraying equipment
fibrous plasterering - making ornamental plastererwork such as ceiling roses, cornices, ornamental columns and architraves from a mixture of plasterer and short fibres, often following drawings produced by an architect, artist or interior designer, using tools including moulds and casts. Some firms employ fibrous makers and fibrous fixers.
A third rapidly growing area often associated with plasterering is drylining. Essentially, this is a generic term used to describe the construction of internal partitions using plastererboard or wallboard. Wall and floor partitions are constructed by fastening boards together onto a timber or metal frame ready for decorating. See also Ceiling Fixer.
plastererers work for specialist plasterering firms, building contractors, local authorities and other public organisations. Many are self-employed and work as sub-contractors, working as 'labour only' with materials supplied by the building contractor. There may be opportunities to work abroad on contracts.

plasterering mixer passes the test
A plastererers mixer has passed the test after it was returned to its supplier after 18 years of service. Coloured plasterer
New ground is being made in the development of coloured plasterer. Now plastererers can ply their trade in a range of coloured plasterers. Does this spell the end of painters?
How the web is helping plastererers
The web is having a significant and positive impact on the fortunes of plastererers according to a new study released today.
The research by thebestof, a national network of local marketing websites, run by local people, that champion the best businesses in their area shows that small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) plan to grow their businesses by on average 38% in the coming year. However the more web-savvy SMEs including builders have growth ambitions that are twice those of their conventional SME counterparts (41% vs 20%).
The study is based on telephone interviews with 500 small and medium sized businesses combined with an online survey completed by a further 2,583 SMEs. The businesses were drawn from across the UK and from a mix of sectors, and included plastererers and 70 builders.
