A plumber is the man or woman you would call when your in need of services connected with water. Most plumbers also train to become heating engineers, but the trade is diversifying more with the new regulations and CORGI certificates being introduced. Nowadays if you require heating services you would call a certified heating engineer, and if you required a bath or shower installed, a leak fixed, or a drain unblocked you would call a plumber.
Plumbers are very important in society, and people will always need plumbers. Good plumbing is vital to public health (plumbers deal with clean drinking water and sanitation), and is also an integral part of modern life. Without a competent plumber disease would be rife in society, sanitation non-existent, clean drinking water from a tap a dream and central heating would consist of a coal or wood burning materials.
It takes years of training to become qualified in plumbing, and a career in the trade requires a dedication to lifelong learning. An understanding of maths and science is vital, and those on the tools need a head for heights, a strong stomach and the ability to work in cramped conditions. The plumbing industry holds diverse career paths, good wages and the opportunity for individuals to run their own business. Many plumbers progress to design, consultancy, teaching and management, making the plumbing and heating industry a career with a future.

Rogue Traders. Customers in Britain spend on average two weeks of their lives waiting at home for rogue tradesmen who fail to turn up, according to a new survey.
Plumbers head a list of shame of Britain’s most unreliable workmen, keeping people waiting for hours on end. People in three out of four homes (more than 18 million) have said they had waited in for a tradesman who didn’t arrive.
And a third of adults (around 15 million) said they have lost a whole day or more waiting for a knock on the door that never came. More than half of people surveyed by community website thebestof.co.uk said it had happened to them twice or more. The average wait of six hours 48 minutes occurred on average every five years, adding up to over 80 hours in a lifetime - the equivalent to two working weeks.
How the web is helping plumbers: The web is having a significant and positive impact on the fortunes of plumbers according to a new study released today.
The research by thebestof, a national network of local marketing websites, run by local people, that champion the best businesses in their area shows that small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) plan to grow their businesses by on average 38% in the coming year. However the more web-savvy SMEs including builders have growth ambitions that are twice those of their conventional SME counterparts (41% vs 20%).
The study is based on telephone interviews with 500 small and medium sized businesses combined with an online survey completed by a further 2,583 SMEs. The businesses were drawn from across the UK and from a mix of sectors, and included plumbers and 70 builders.
