If your roof is leaking, or there are tiles missing, or you are working on your own development project and require a roof to be built... then you need to call a roofer, or a roofing contractor. Roofers fix and build roofs for properties. It is a highly skilled and sometimes dangerous trade, and requires a certain character to become a roofer.
There are many types of roofs, and roofers need to be skilled in a number of areas to ply their trade. A roof is the covering of a building and protects the inside and its contents from the elements of the weather. Depending upon the nature of the building, the roof may also protect against heat, sunlight, cold and against the wind. If the roof is the covering for a house, then all these protective functions are called into play.
Roofing materials come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but by far the most common are roofing tiles placed on wooden rafters with an asphalt underlay. These are the types of material used on the majority of modern house in the UK. Most roofers will be familiar with, and will be used to working with these materials. So if you need a new roof, a roof repaired or rebuilt, a roofer or a roofing contract would be the trade you would nee to call.
Roofers build and repair roofs on all types of buildings. The jobs can include stripping and re-slating the roof on a house, restoring roofs on historical buildings and working on new commercial developments. You do not need any specific qualifications to be a roofer but employers tend to want people with some on-site experience. If you have not worked in construction before, then you may want to think about working as a roofing labourer to gain site experience. Once working, the employer may be willing to offer you training in roofing.

New developments on solar roof panels
When the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden is completed later this year, the new solar roof panels being installed will be capable of generating about 16% of the museum’s electricity.
The 33.12kWp-capacity installation by roofing contractor Mundy with new
natural slates has been part-funded by the Dti’s Photovoltaic Demonstration Programme and Transport for London.
The PV solar panels butt up to the slates by lead flashing, and a sophisticated secret gutter system to collect any rainwater. The PV system connects directly to a new plant room assembled off-site for installation on a new section of steel frame above the roof of an office area.
The Lafarge PV 800 system integrates directly with its most popular
slates and tiles in the Redland range, without the need for any special
flashings or secret gutters - which is why it is already an
established eco specification for energy efficient housing.
How the web is helping roofers
The web is having a significant and positive impact on the fortunes of roofers according to a new study released today.
The study is based on telephone interviews with 500 small and medium sized businesses combined with an online survey completed by a further 2,583 SMEs. The businesses were drawn from across the UK and from a mix of sectors, and included roofers and 70 builders.
