Scaffolders erect and dismantle scaffolding to provide work platforms on building sites or temporary structures such as stages and catwalks and for the purpose of painting, repairing, seating, disguising facades.They check the construction requirements from drawings and written instructions,select materials and set ground levels;fit together steel pipes,support braces and clamps to form bases for scaffolds; lift and position sections of scaffolding and bolt pipes together to build up scaffolding;place planks over horizontal bars to create platforms;check levels in scaffolding structures; use prefabricated scaffolding when available and dismantle scaffolding at the completion of a job.

Scaffolding - health and safety inspections sweep

BUILDING work was brought to a halt at nearly half the construction sites in in the North of England after inspectors said they failed to meet safety standards. One of the biggest causes of concern was unsafe scaffolding and poor planning with regards to working at height. More than a dozen prohibition notices were issued and a small number of companies may face prosecution.

Scaffolders need to be continously aware of the risks to health and safety in the way they erect their scaffolding. Incidents involving scaffolding account for the majority of accidents that happen on building sites in England.

Scaffolders risk being exposed if they ignore stringent safety guidelines. Paul Sewell, managing director of the Sewell Group, said inspections exposed contractors who did not invest in health and safety adding "We consider that every incident avoided or potential life saved is worth every hour or pound spent."
